Krabi Town is the real, working town at the heart of Krabi Province, set on the Krabi River estuary about 30 minutes from the Ao Nang coast. The old town has attractive Sino-Portuguese shophouses, a lively night market and cheap food that undercuts the tourist-strip prices considerably. It's also the main transport hub for ferries, buses and minivans to Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Lanta and beyond. There's no beach, but it's the best base for budget-conscious travellers who want local atmosphere over sand.
