Klong Muang resorts are the quiet alternative when Ao Nang is too much. The best of them put a calm beach on the doorstep, about 15 minutes north of town, and the 2026 price is the real decision. You pay resort rates because there is almost nowhere else to eat, and there is no nightlife once the hotel bar closes.
Klong Muang and Tubkaek sit on the same road, 13 km north of Ao Nang. The beaches are wide and flat, and the water in front of most resorts is calm enough to swim. Phulay Bay is the exception: a 2026 write-up of the property calls the shallows rocky, with dredging in the bay and a longtail to Koh Hong as the workaround. West of you is a line of karst islands. That sunset is the best on the Krabi mainland.
The trade-off is blunt. No convenience stores. No ATMs on the beach strip. Bring cash from Ao Nang or the airport.

Same road. Klong Muang is the longer beach and the more practical base. Tubkaek, a few kilometres further north, is the sunset and the expensive villas. A car between Ao Nang and Klong Muang is ฿400 on the Ao Nang Green Wave and AOM lists. Green Wave asks ฿500 to Tubkaak. GuideKRABI has the Klong Muang to Ao Nang run at ฿850, so agree the fare before you sit down. Dusit’s own site says the Ao Nang hop is about 15 minutes.

Klong Muang resort prices in 2026
These are snapshots from 12 Oct 2026, not a rate you can hold. Dollar listings are turned into baht at ฿33.5 to the dollar, the mid-rate that morning. Hotel tax and breakfast are not always in the number.
Sofitel is the one clean baht quote. The hotel is advertising the Exclusive Krabi Retreat from ฿3,655++ a night with breakfast for two, if you book at least three days ahead. The ++ means service charge and tax still sit on top. A separate Discovery Escape is listed from ฿6,480+++ for stays between 1 February and 30 November 2026, two nights minimum.
Phulay Bay’s 365-night tracker (LuxuryIntel, read the same day) bottomed at US$534 on 9 September, about ฿18,000, and spiked to US$3,360 on 27 December, about ฿113,000. The median night was about US$966, roughly ฿32,000. Banyan Tree’s direct garden-pool-suite floor that day was US$429, about ฿14,400 (Fermata). Dusit deals on HotelsCombined, updated 7 Oct, started at US$113, about ฿3,800, with a typical night nearer US$200. Kayak’s monthly averages put September near US$135 and February near US$470. Tup Kaek’s cheapest HotelsCombined night on 29 Aug was US$103, about ฿3,500. The Tubkaak was listing around US$230, about ฿7,700. Anyavee Tubkaek was still open, with Kayak showing rooms from about US$42, roughly ฿1,400.
What makes this coast different
Klong Muang and Tubkaek cover the northern stretch of Krabi’s beachable mainland. Klong Muang beach runs roughly 2 km, backed by casuarina trees and hotel grounds — calm, flat, swimmable at most tides. Tubkaek beach picks up just north and faces directly west across a bay dotted with limestone karst islands. At low tide the water pulls back considerably, but the view is outstanding and high tide gives you a proper swim.
Neither beach has a town behind it. What exists: the resort restaurants, a few small roadside Thai spots on the highway behind the Sofitel, and roughly nothing else. That is the point. Guests who check in here are paying — explicitly or implicitly — for the absence of the noise and crowds that come with staying closer to Ao Nang. Day-trippers do not come here.
The island boats to Railay, the Four Islands and the Hong Islands leave from Ao Nang or Nopparat Thara. Budget a taxi each way on top of the tour. If you are out on a boat most days, the fare adds up. If the point is a few quiet days, it does not matter.
Getting there
From Ao Nang: songthaews do not reliably cover this stretch. A private car is the practical option. Ao Nang Green Wave and AOM both list ฿400 for a car to or from Klong Muang. Green Wave lists ฿500 to Tubkaak. GuideKRABI lists ฿850 for Klong Muang to Ao Nang. Ask the resort to book it, and check the number before you get in. Dusit puts the drive at about 15 minutes.
From Krabi Airport: ask the resort first. Several of the big ones run their own pickup, and Phulay Bay publishes a one-way airport shuttle at ฿3,885. If you are buying a taxi yourself, the airport transfer guide has the desk price at ฿700–1,100 and about 35–40 minutes. There is no shared shuttle you can count on for this coast.
Scooter: the road from Ao Nang is flat and simple. Hire one in Ao Nang if you want to skip the taxi, and ask the shop that day’s rate.
Ultra-luxury: Phulay Bay and Banyan Tree
Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
Phulay Bay is the standout property on this coast. Fifty-four pool villas spread across 24 hectares at the northern end of Tubkaek beach, with a design philosophy that keeps everything low-rise and garden-immersed. Every room is a villa with a private pool. The smallest start at around 130 sq m; the larger pavilion and two-bedroom villas push well above 200 sq m.
On 12 Oct 2026 a daily tracker had a September night at about ฿18,000 and a 27 December night at about ฿113,000, with a typical night nearer ฿32,000. See the price section above for the sources. It is still not the target for most trips. What you get for it is space, service and quiet that nothing else on this coast matches. The restaurants are a real part of the stay, the spa is large, and the beach in front of the villas is prettier in photos than in the water.
The practical note: the villa layout means guests spend more time walking between facilities than at a conventional resort. That is a design choice, not a flaw — the grounds are beautiful — but worth knowing if you expected a short walk from bed to pool.
Best for: honeymoons, milestone celebrations, or anyone for whom Railay’s Rayavadee is too small and Phuket’s Amanpuri is overkill.
Banyan Tree Krabi
Banyan Tree opened here in 2021, newer than Phulay Bay and with a tighter layout. It is still 72 pool villas on the Tubkaek beachfront. A garden pool suite was listing from about ฿14,400 on 12 Oct 2026, and beachfront categories cost more. The villas are contemporary, with private pools. The beach club is the real difference from Phulay Bay. The main pool and bar are somewhere guests actually gather, and the dining is polished.
Between the two ultra-luxury options, Phulay Bay has more ground and a more immersive garden feel; Banyan Tree is newer, slightly more social, and a step up on the bar and pool scene. Both are beyond most budgets — but if a night or two at the top end is the plan, these are the only two properties in Krabi that can credibly compete with the Phuket ultra-luxury tier.
Five-star mainstream: Dusit Thani and Sofitel
Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort
The Dusit Thani is the most sensible choice on this coast for guests who want genuine 5-star quality without the ultra-luxury price tag. The resort sits right on Klong Muang beach — direct access, two pools, a spa, a gym, and multiple restaurants. Rooms are well-appointed by Thai 5-star standards, some with their own plunge pools.
Listings in the week of 12 Oct 2026 started near ฿3,800. Kayak’s monthly pattern still has September as the cheap month and February as the expensive one, with a February average near ฿15,700. Breakfast is often an add-on. Check whether it is in the rate before you compare two offers.
Service thins out when the hotel is full, and some room categories look older in the fixtures. The food is solid. The beach position is the reason to book it.
Best for: the best of this coast at a price that isn’t the price of a small car per night.
Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort
The Sofitel is the other obvious large 5-star option on Klong Muang. It’s set back slightly further from the beach than the Dusit Thani, with a massive free-form pool as the centrepiece — genuinely one of the better resort pools in Krabi. The hotel also has the only golf course in the area (9 holes), and a large spa. Rooms are solidly Sofitel-standard: good beds, reliable air conditioning, the brand’s consistent finish.
The hotel’s own offer, live on 12 Oct 2026, starts at ฿3,655++ with breakfast if you book three days ahead. December will be higher. Check those dates on the day. The beach is a short walk through the grounds. The pool is close to the rooms. If the pool matters more than stepping onto sand, the Sofitel often wins.
Best for: families who want a pool-centred resort, or couples who want a large spa without Ritz-Carlton rates.
Best boutique: The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort
The Tubkaak sits at the northern end of Tubkaek beach, smaller than the Dusit or Sofitel and deliberately so — 69 rooms and villas against several hundred at the larger properties. The design is upmarket Thai contemporary: teak and stone, a beachfront infinity pool facing directly onto the karst island view, some rooms with private pool access.
Recent 2026 listings sat around ฿7,700 a night. Pool villas cost more. The resort’s own early-bird offer still runs for stays through 19 December 2026. People book it for the service and the sunset view off the pool.
What the Tubkaak does better than the large 5-stars: a sense of place. The island view from the pool at sunset is exceptional, the restaurant is small enough that it feels like a dining room rather than a canteen, and the property is quiet in a way that 200-room resorts rarely are. What it doesn’t do: the scale of facilities — no golf, smaller gym, fewer restaurant options — that the Dusit or Sofitel provide.
Best for: couples who want a boutique feel and don’t need resort-scale facilities.
Mid-range: Tup Kaek Sunset Beach Resort
Tup Kaek Sunset Beach Resort is the 3-star on this coast. Current hotel listings class it that way. It sits on Tubkaek in thatch-roofed bungalows. A late-August 2026 listing floor was about ฿3,500. The rooms are solid and ordinary. There is a pool, a beach restaurant and seafront dining. You are paying for the sand, not for a design hotel.
Set against the Dusit, the cheap nights are closer than they used to look. The Dusit is the much larger hotel, with better rooms and more going on. Tup Kaek is the way to sleep on Tubkaek without the villa money. In December that gap will open up again. Check both for your dates rather than trusting either floor.
More affordable options
Anyavee Tubkaek Beach Resort is still open on Tubkaek. Kayak was showing rooms from about ฿1,400 in October 2026, so the old ฿2,000–3,500 band is no longer the floor. There are smaller guesthouses behind the strip as well. They are not boutique. You get the area, older facilities, and a less direct walk to the sand. Klong Muang or Tubkaek?
Klong Muang beach itself is the longer, broader of the two stretches and has the largest concentration of hotels — the Dusit Thani and Sofitel sit here, along with many of the smaller properties. The beach is good: flat, calm, swimmable, with a small island visible from the shoreline. It’s the more practical base in terms of resort facilities and getting picked up for tours.
Tubkaek, a few kilometres north, has the better sunset view — the karst island cluster is more dramatic here, sitting directly in the sightline west. Phulay Bay, Banyan Tree, and The Tubkaak are all on Tubkaek beach for this reason. The beach itself is slightly narrower and goes shallower at low tide, but the view more than compensates. Both beaches are accessed from the same road; picking between them is mostly about which properties suit you rather than any meaningful difference in what you’ll experience day to day.
Practical notes for this coast
Cash: there are no ATMs on the beach strip. Withdraw in Ao Nang, at Krabi airport, or at Krabi Town before heading north. Most resorts accept cards for room charges; restaurants and taxis will want cash.
Food outside the resort: a handful of basic Thai places sit on the highway behind the Sofitel. Beyond that it is the hotel restaurant, or a taxi back to Ao Nang. Most people eat in. Put the meals in the room budget.
Tides: both Klong Muang and Tubkaek go shallow at low tide. This doesn’t block swimming but does change the feel of the beach significantly. High tide gives you the better swim; low tide gives you more sand to walk.
Boat tours: island tours don’t launch from here — you’ll head to Ao Nang or Nopparat Thara for the Four Islands tour and the Koh Hong Islands. Budget the taxi fare each way. Most resorts will book tours and arrange pickup; this is the smoothest option.
